Moo (FFwD: Corn Pancakes)

An abbreviated vacation French Friday...

Corn pancakes were made.

See them on the griddle?

A CSA salad was made...

And it was eaten.

For dinner.

The end.

Okay, one short anectdote. It's kind of corn related - it's really farm related; but corn grows on a farm, right?

When I was a wee one, I lived in a house that was surrounded on three sides by fields belonging to a neighboring farm.

A hay field on one side and cow pastures on the other two sides (with real live cows in them).

Said real live cows really liked the apples and pears that fell over the fence from the trees in my parents back yard.

The bathroom in my parents house overlooked the backyard and fields and cows.

Sometimes the cows would break loose, come up to the house, and look up into the bathroom window. If you weren't paying attention, it would startle you. Boo! (I was startled on more than one occasion by Bessie's eyes peering in on me.)

Finally, the cows would meander back down the road and back to their barn.

I don't know why this dish reminded me of that but it did.

P.S. My parents are celebrating their 55th Anniversary this Friday! Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad.

  2. Congratulations to Runner girl and to your parents on their anniversary.
Love your story, as usual, and sorry you did not care for the corn pancakes.
After reading your comment on one blog, I spiced mine up just in case.
Actually, i like both versions, Dorie's and mine. I guess a little sour cream did the trick. Enjoy your vacation.

  3. That's hilarious! I live in the Westend, which is a downtown neighbourhood that cuddles up to a giant park (stanley park). So we have LOTS of skunk, raccoons and pigeons. My sister used to live in an old character house less than a block from my apartment and she left the window open in the bathroom. When she walk back into the bathroom she screamed when she found a raccoon in the tub looking at her. Luckily it scrambled up the wall and out the window and into the tree outside (she was on the 3rd floor). Talk about boo!

  4. Appropriately for the location, I would crap my pants if a cow was looking through my bathroom window.

Congrats to runner girl and your parents!

  8. The cow anecdote reminds me of my childhood. Not that they came peeping through the window, but the appeared near our farm house all the time. Congrats to your papas and runner girl! Have a great weekend!

  18. I have never had a cow peep in on me, but I have had deer, racoons, and chipmunks peer into my bedroom window. Which all sounds very cute (and sometimes it is), but when you wake with a start from a bad dream, those big doe eyes look really, really menacing in the dark.... :)

  25. I suspect that there is a reason that your daughter (aka Runner Girl) is wearing Red. Good Grades, maybe? I hope you cried at graduation. Mothers NEED to embarrass their children at times. From your various Posts I believe your beach sojour was bliss. And, congratulations to your parents. Fifty-five years is huge. Cows are characters. You have to love 'em. A little startling, perhaps, peering through your window. Did anyone like the corn pancakes? Tell us next week.

seems like you are having a busy and happy summer. I have never tried corn pancakes, I tried corn bread once and was not a big fan.

  27. Ah memories. Funnily enough, I have very similar memories of my own childhood. We too had an orchard and we too had neighborly cows who would occasionally wander over for a visit.

    Congrats on your graduate!
